Since I was a little girl I have always loved hats. I think it started with the head-to-toe nautical sailor outfit my mom put me in on my first day of kindergarten, complete with a white and navy sailor hat (not the most practical attire for a three year old about to spend her morning on a jungle gym). Although I’ve retired the little white and navy sailor outfit, there will always be a place in my heart for a good hat.
My newest hat has quickly become a staple in my summer wardrobe, particularly on second-day-hair days. This gorgeous hat from Goorin Brothers (@GoorinBros), with a black/cream ribbon and Goorin Brothers pin, is perfect for those hot days on a patio, enjoying the sunshine on a beach, or just popping around town.
If you’re not familiar with Goorin Brothers, the family of hat makers started making hats in 1895 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Cassel Goorin started selling his hats off of his horse cart. By 1960 Goorin Brothers became the official headwear for the Winter Olympics and in 2006 Cassel’s great-grandson began running the company. Goorin Brothers’ most recent claim to fame is creating The Official Heisenberg Hat famously worn by Walter White (Bryan Cranston) in the infamous AMC television series Breaking Bad.
The Goorin Brothers store I popped into on Queen St. W in Toronto really brings you back to the old hat shops that you imagine going to in the 1940s. The people who work in the store are incredibly friendly and are happy to help you pick the perfect hat that best fits the shape of your face, no matter how long it takes. The hat I purchased is made of Shantung straw, Japanese hand-woven paper that is hand rolled and glazed. The hat is really comfortable and is not compromised by sweat or makeup at all (something I was extremely concerned about).
Yes, these hats can be quite pricey, up to $300 a hat, but Goorin Brothers also make less-expensive hats, starting at $20. It’s a great, well made accessory that easily makes a simple jeans and t-shirt look more interesting; every time I wear this hat a get a ton of compliments.
I highly recommend checking out Goorin Brothers hats to add a little vintage-flare to your summer wardrobe. I can’t wait to get a wool fedora for the fall!
